From now on, travelers can book their economy tickets according to a new price concept at Lufthansa. It is the airline’s reaction to growing competition. Flights will be cheaper for passengers with hand luggage only.
The airline Lufthansa is reorganizing its previous pricing system. It is adjusting the prices of its tickets in reaction to the growing competition from low-cost carriers. As of Tuesday (28.07.2015), economy flights from October 1 can be booked according to Lufthansa’s new three-tier system.
Economy Light: Tickets from 89 euros for a round-trip flight, hand luggage only, no rebooking or refund possible, surcharge for seat bookings and excess baggage
Economy Classic: Tickets from 129 euros, an extra piece of baggage and seat requests are included in the price
Economy Flex: 60 to 160 euros more than Classic, free transfers and changes to the itinerary are possible
In all service levels, free snacks will still be served. Another new feature is in the Business Class (return from 399 euros): Rebooking and cancellations are fully flexible.
In September, Lufthansa will increase the cost of flights which were not booked via the company’s own website. A 16 euro surcharge will have to paid by those making reservations on data sharing systems like Sabre travel agencies and Amadeus.
Lufthansa is exposed on one side to the pressure of its unions and on the other side to the competition. The Irish low-cost airline Ryanair announced plans to use profits from the summer business to aggressively reduce the price of tickets in the winter. Lufthansa pilots have already been on strike as part of the ongoing labor dispute.
