A suspect linked to the shooting down of a military helicopter has been arrested, the armed forces announced Friday.

The military made two arrests Thursday after receiving information regarding the suspect’s hideout, located west of the city of Sheikh Zuweid, according to a statement issued by the armed forces. The statement described the two as “highly extremist”.

One of the suspects, who allegedly shot down a military helicopter last month, sustained gunshot wounds in a exchange of fire with security forces and was transferred to a hospital for treatment and will remain under supervision amid ongoing investigations, the army reported.

On 25 January, a military helicopter crashed in Al-Shallaq near Sheikh Zuweid in the volatile North Sinai governorate. Armed Sinai-based militant group Ansar Beit Al-Maqdis claimed responsibility for the attack and released a video showing them shooting down the aircraft with a surface-to-air missile (SAM).
