CAIRO: The Cairo Security Directorate warned the April 6 Youth Movement against holding demonstrations on Tuesday, April 6.
The Directorate sent an official warning to members of the movement through the headquarters of the Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (ANHRI), in its capacity as the legal representative for the members of the movement.
ANHRI had sent a notice last week to the Cairo Security Directorate informing them that the movement is planning a peaceful march on April 6, starting from Tahrir Square and moving towards the Parliamentary headquarters. Once there, the group planned to present a note to members of Parliament calling for the removal of the emergency law that has been implemented for around 30 years, and the amendment of the constitution, namely articles 76 and 77, regulating presidential terms and nominations, and article 88, regarding judicial supervision of elections.
The Cairo Security Directorate voiced, in a copy of the warning obtained by Daily News Egypt, its disapproval of the planned march citing security reasons.
“Due to the current security situation and public disturbance marches like this can cause in the capital, we warn the movement of our disapproval on organizing the march, for security and stability reasons, while holding them responsible for any violations that occur, read the warning.
The April 6 Movement stressed, however, that they will go through with the march as scheduled.
“We insist on holding the march because it’s our constitutional and legal right, Ahmed Maher, general coordinator of the movement, told Daily News Egypt. “We followed the laws that oblige us to notify the security services of the date and itinerary of the march, but they have no right to refuse.
ANHRI expressed its support to the Movement’s decision in a statement obtained by Daily News Egypt.
“The April 6 Youth Movement has abided by the law and they have the right to execute this peaceful march, while the Security Directorate hasn’t presented any justification for its refusal. We will support the movement’s legal right if they insist on going through with the march or go to court to force the Interior Ministry to respect the law.
On the other hand, Ayman Nour, leader of Al-Ghad party, received an oral refusal in response to a petition he presented to the Ministry of Interior to hold a press conference in Tahrir Square on the evening of April 6, to announce the “nations’ demands and his parties’ electoral program.
Nour said that he will file a lawsuit to the Administrative Court, explaining that refusing the convention of a press conference is a violation of the law and the constitution
He added, however, that he will hold the press conference at this downtown office on the morning of April 6.
