MANAMA: A Bahrain-based British banker has been detained in neighboring Dubai, apparently in connection with investment funds, a Bahraini newspaper reported on Thursday.

Charles Ridley has been in jail in Dubai for almost a week and it is believed that one of his Bahrain-based business associates is also held there, the English-language Gulf Daily News said.

The paper said it remains unknown exactly why he has been incarcerated, but quoted unnamed sources as saying the arrest was related to funds that had invested in petrochemical developments in Pakistan.

It is believed an Islamic bank in Dubai had invested in the funds, Gulf Daily News said.

The paper quoted Ridley s wife as saying British diplomats in Dubai had access to him on Wednesday.

Dubai, part of the United Arab Emirates, is a thriving business and leisure hub in the Gulf, while Bahrain is a major regional banking centre.

British officials in Dubai could not immediately be reached for comment. -AFP
