CAIRO: With the amount of events taking place both within Egypt and in the region as a whole, newspapers and magazines are never struggling to find information to fill their pages. While some people simply pick up a publication to take a gander at the horoscope, others take the time to read the publication from cover to cover.

But what has captivated readers’ attention over the past week? The Daily Star Egypt took to the streets to find out what news is currently foremost on people’s minds.

What is capturing my attention now is the standoff with Iran; I feel that it (Iran) is the last line of defense against America and Israel. We had hope in the Iraqi resistance, but it was in vain; we are also expecting Syria to face a similar situation.Adel, physician

I focus on the stock market and currency exchange news. It really matters to me. Each piaster up or down affects my business. I definitely read regional and local news, but I have to admit that I care about my business more.Magdy, businessman

There is nothing that does not have importance in the news; all news is important and that s why it gets published. These days, however, I keep an eye on the sports news. I really like the media coverage of the world cup. It may sound less important for some people, but I enjoy this coverage and the players news outside the field. Samya, interpreter

I read the entire newspaper, but the first thing I read is the weather forecast. It may affect my entire schedule for the day, especially in the summer. I usually cancel my appointments if the weather is too bad. Alyaa, secretary

What has captured my attention over the past few days is the Israeli strike against Gaza. The same in Iraq, we read that 20 people were killed in Iraq and feel that there is nothing happening. I feel sorry for the situation in the Arab world. It is so weak and disseminated; the governments are careless.Saleh, waiter

What can follow the news over the past year? There’s the avian flu, the ship catastrophe, Omar Effendi news and just more of the same. There is nothing new in the news. I advice nervous people to stay away from any kind of news, as it may cause them death by a stroke.Ahmad, civil servant

I don t read newspapers or watch the news. I just follow celebrities news. I may sound shallow, but I focus all my concentration in my work, so I need something silly in my life to make it tolerable.Sally, customer service official

I have a different interest everyday in the news, according to my mood. But I mainly focus on the currency exchange. For instance, I made good benefits from such news last month. I need to keep an eye on it and stay alert. The loss in that field may kick me out of the market.Sayed, businessman
