The Centre for Trade Union and Workers’ Services (CTUWS) announced on Sunday a conference to launch the newly formed Democratic Union of Egyptian Workers (DUEW).

The decision to form the DUEW was made in October 2011 at a conference bringing together a number of independent trade unions. According to a statement by the CTUWS, the independent unions decided “to employ all efforts and perseverance in order to achieve the goal and dream of the Egyptian labour movement to create a workers union that is independent of the government”.

The CTUSW asserted that the newly formed union will be democratic and that “no one will have power over it except its own general assembly and the union of workers will struggle relentlessly to improve the terms and conditions of employment and defend the rights of Egyptian workers”.

The CTUSW will hold a conference on Wednesday to launch the DUEW.
