Ahmed Rostom, Minister of Planning and Economic Development, met with a high-level delegation of executives from Fitch Ratings to review the latest indicators of Egypt’s economic performance and discuss the government’s efforts to advance economic and structural reforms amid ongoing geopolitical and regional challenges.

During the meeting, Rostom said the Egyptian economy achieved a growth rate of 5.1% in FY2025/2026, compared with around 4.4% in the previous fiscal year.

He said the recovery was driven by strong growth across productive and service sectors with high added value, particularly non-petroleum manufacturing and communications and information technology.

Rostom also highlighted the resilience of the transport and logistics sector, noting continued growth in Suez Canal revenues and activity despite the exceptional challenges affecting shipping in the region. He said this demonstrated the Egyptian economy’s resilience and ability to withstand external shocks.

The minister also reviewed positive developments in key macroeconomic indicators, saying government policies had helped place inflation on a sustainable downward trajectory, reaching 12.7% in August 2026.

He added that unemployment fell to 5.8% in the second quarter of 2026, underscoring the resilience of the labour market and the economy’s ability to create jobs.

Rostom stressed the government’s commitment to implementing its economic and structural transformation programme to enhance competitiveness. He noted that a package of measures and policies had been adopted to create an attractive investment environment that supports both domestic and foreign private-sector investment, with a focus on export-oriented, productive, and labour-intensive sectors.

He said the ultimate objective of these reforms was not limited to improving financial indicators, but was primarily focused on ensuring that economic development and growth translate into improved living standards for Egyptian citizens and higher-quality services.

The minister also discussed the economic outlook, forecasting that the recovery would continue, with growth expected to reach between 5.2% and 5.4% during the current fiscal year.

He attributed the expected improvement to anticipated expansion in private-sector investment and positive progress in measures related to promising economic sectors.
