Egypt is showcasing its experience in addressing water scarcity and climate adaptation at the high-level segment of the 17th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP17) in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
Water Resources and Irrigation Minister Hani Sewilam participated in the opening of the high-level segment, which brings together ministers, heads of delegations and representatives of international institutions and organisations to discuss efforts to combat desertification, land degradation and drought.
Sewilam said water, land, climate and food security are closely interconnected, requiring integrated policies and solutions that maximise the benefits of natural resources while supporting sustainable water and land management.
He stressed the need to move beyond responding to crises after they occur and instead strengthen preparedness and resilience against growing climate-related pressures.
Egypt, Sewilam said, is contributing to international discussions based on its extensive experience in dealing with water scarcity, including efforts to improve water-use efficiency, expand the reuse of agricultural drainage water and implement climate adaptation projects.
The country is also increasingly using technology and innovation to improve water management as it seeks to address mounting pressures on its limited water resources.
Sewilam is scheduled to participate in several ministerial dialogues and high-level sessions during the conference to present Egypt’s approach to drought and the links between water, land and climate.
Egypt’s participation will also focus on mobilising financing and investment to help countries most vulnerable to drought, land degradation and water scarcity strengthen their resilience and implement adaptation measures.
