Egypt’s National Navigation Company has received two new 82,000-ton Kamsarmax dry bulk carriers, “Wadi El Nil” and “Wadi El Kamar,” from the Chinese shipyard New Hantong as part of a state initiative to modernise the national commercial fleet.
Minister of Transport Lieutenant General Engineer Kamel Al-Wazir witnessed the handover ceremony for the two vessels yesterday. “Wadi El Nil” is currently sailing towards Egypt, while “Wadi El Kamar” is preparing to depart. The acquisition is intended to enhance the fleet’s competitiveness in regional and international markets.
The two identical dry bulk carriers each measure 229 metres in length, 32.26 metres in width, and have a draft of 14.5 metres. Designed as the latest additions to the Egyptian commercial fleet, the ships incorporate advanced global technologies aimed at increasing operational efficiency and optimising fuel consumption.
Each vessel is powered by a 7,490-kilowatt MAN B&W main engine equipped with a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system to limit emissions and comply with the latest international environmental requirements. The ships also feature Ballast Water Management Systems designed to protect marine environments and prevent the transfer of marine organisms between different habitats, in accordance with international agreements.
To support extended voyages, the vessels have a fuel capacity of 2,054 cubic metres, allowing for up to 90 days of continuous sailing without stopping. They are also equipped with integrated seawater desalination plants capable of producing 20 tons of water daily to meet operational needs. Furthermore, the carriers are fitted with integrated navigation systems, modern communication devices, and advanced engine monitoring and control technology to ensure safety and operational efficiency.
