Egypt’s Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Hani Sewilam, met with members of parliament to discuss public requests related to covering irrigation canals and replacing or rehabilitating bridges, stressing that all proposals must undergo comprehensive technical evaluation to safeguard the efficiency of the country’s water management system.

According to a ministry statement, Sewilam met MP Gamal El-Far of Dakahlia and MP Amani Abou El-Yazid of Kafr El-Sheikh as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen coordination between the executive and legislative branches.

The minister reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to maintaining regular communication with lawmakers, describing them as an important link between the government and citizens in identifying local priorities and ensuring that public requests are considered in accordance with applicable laws, regulations and technical standards.

During the meeting, the parties reviewed several proposals to cover sections of irrigation canals. Sewilam stressed that any such requests must first be supported by detailed technical studies to ensure they do not adversely affect the efficiency of irrigation networks or the management and distribution of water resources.

The discussions also addressed requests to replace or rehabilitate bridges spanning waterways. Sewilam instructed the ministry’s technical departments to conduct field inspections without delay and take the necessary measures based on the structural condition of each bridge and the extent to which rehabilitation or replacement is required.
