Egypt’s Irrigation Minister discuss water concerns with UNGA’s president’s advisor

Egypt’s Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Hani Sweilam; met with Johannes Cullmann, the Scientific advisor to the President of the UN General Assembly. Both officials reviewed the steps that were taken after the UN Water Conference, which was held in March 2023.

The meeting came on the sidelines of Sweilam’s participation in the “World Water Week – WWW” in Stockholm, Sweden.

Sweilam indicated that Egypt and Japan will organize a high-level session on the sidelines of the sixth edition of the Cairo Water Week to discuss the results of the interactive dialogue on water and climate and ways to move forward in this regard.

The preparations for the next summit of the United Nations General Assembly and the sustainable development goals, scheduled to be held in September 2023, were also discussed, in addition to the expected discussions during the summit on the water file and achieving the goals of sustainable development.

They also discussed the ongoing procedures for holding the upcoming COP28, where Sweilam referred to the ongoing coordination between Egypt and the UAE in this regard to continue placing the water file at the top of the global climate agenda, as Egypt will participate in a closed session during the WWW to prepare for the COP28.

Sweilam explained that Egypt is currently working in coordination with Japan and the United Kingdom to submit a report to the Secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change to continue building on the achievements of the water file, which were achieved during the COP27, to continue integrating water issues into global climate discussions.
