Egypt’s Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad held a meeting on Wednesday with representatives of the World Bank (WB) to discuss the latest developments in preparing the Country Climate and Development Report (CCDR).

The WB is preparing the CCDR in a number of countries, including Egypt.

During the meeting, the minister praised the constructive support provided by the WB — especially in the climate file — and its support for Egypt’s hosting of the upcoming UN Conference of Parties on Climate Change (COP27). She also praised the efforts of the work team from the bank and the ministry to finalise this report, which will be an important document to be placed before decision makers to help them take appropriate measures.

Fouad also stressed her keenness to come up with a country report on climate and development in Egypt that provides a useful model for other countries, which we will present at the COP27 as one of the important steps in Egypt’s march towards confronting the effects of climate change.

Furthermore, the minister also referred to the opportunity offered by the process of preparing the report to benefit from the experiences of the WB in preparing economic analyses to integrate climate into development paths, form visions for ways to overcome challenges, and to come up with organised frameworks.

Fouad further explained that the report will help determine the paths that the state wants to take in the field of climate and development; the most effective steps at the institutional, organisational, and legislative levels; and identify the points that require more long-term planning.

“After the pandemic, most countries’ view of the tourism sector and the preservation of natural resources changed to turn to sustainable and environmental tourism, which requires that the report give us indications about the tourism sector,” Fouad said.

For their part, the WB representatives praised Egypt’s cooperation in preparing this important report, which will be a crucial indicator in dealing with the effects of climate change in the coming period, stressing their interest in highlighting the adaptation dimension, which is one of the most important axes of the report.
