Press Syndicate’s electoral commission receives no candidacy appeals

The Head of electoral commission of the Press Syndicate’s midterm elections, Gamal Abdel Rahim, said that they received no appeals from candidates during the first day of receiving appeals.

The commission started to receive appeals on 15 February and will continue until Tuesday. It is expected that the commission will hold a conference on Tuesday to announce the final list of candidates.

Renowned journalist Diaa Rashwan, who is running for the syndicate’s president, aims to increase journalist’s allowances and pensions, and allow journalists working in online news websites to enter the syndicate after the membership was previously limited to those working in magazines and newspapers.

The commission announced that 11 candidates are running for the president while 53 others ran for the six seats in the syndicate’s board. The syndicate’s midterm election will be carried out on 1 March.

The current Head of Press Syndicate, Abdel Mohsen Salama, announced he would not run for a second term.
