Minister of Industry Khaled Hashem and Minister of Youth and Sports Gohar Nabil inspected the Mintra Egypt factory for sports footwear and bags in the Nasr City Free Zone as part of government efforts to monitor industrial operations, address manufacturers’ challenges and promote the localisation of sports equipment manufacturing.
The factory spans more than 75,000 square metres and has attracted investments of $100 million. It has an annual production capacity of 25 million pairs of sports shoes and 25 million sports bags, with local components accounting for 70% of production.
Mintra exports products worth around $25 million annually to markets in the United States, Europe, the Arab region and Africa, while its factory provides more than 2,200 jobs for young people and women.
During the tour, the ministers inspected production lines for sports footwear, bags, textiles and insoles, as well as injection moulding machinery, testing laboratories, and the company’s research, development and training facilities.
Hashem reaffirmed the Ministry of Industry’s commitment to deepening the local manufacturing of sports footwear to reduce imports, meet growing domestic demand and expand exports.
He said Egypt has developed the capabilities to manufacture sports footwear that meets quality standards comparable to international brands, highlighting Mintra’s ability to supply sports equipment to official institutions and sports clubs.
He noted that Mintra served as the official footwear sponsor of the Egyptian Olympic delegation at the 2024 Paris Olympics, describing the company’s products as evidence of the competitiveness of Egypt’s sports manufacturing industry.
Hashem added that the ministry is ready to support Mintra’s existing operations and future expansion plans to increase production, create additional jobs, meet local demand and access new export markets.
Company officials also presented Mintra’s manufacturing and export capabilities across its seven factories in several industrial zones, in addition to plans to increase its share of the domestic market.
Nabil said the Ministry of Youth and Sports considers the localisation of sports equipment manufacturing a key pillar of its strategy to build an integrated and sustainable sports ecosystem.
He praised the Ministry of Industry’s efforts to support domestic manufacturing, encourage industrial investment and increase local content, stressing the importance of stronger integration between the industrial and sports sectors.
Nabil said the ministry aims to establish long-term partnerships with specialised Egyptian companies to meet a larger share of the sports sector’s needs through locally manufactured products.
“We aim to expand reliance on Egyptian-made products at youth centres and sports clubs, while exploring the provision of sports equipment for national teams and sports delegations,” he said.
He added that cooperation with Mintra could include developing specialised sports products in coordination with the Egyptian Olympic Committee and national sports federations, leveraging the company’s technological and research and development capabilities.
Nabil said the objective is not only to replace imports but also to develop Egyptian sports products capable of competing in international markets.
Yasser Idris, President of the Egyptian Olympic Committee, said athlete preparation requires high-quality equipment tailored to the specific needs of each sport.
He noted that Mintra’s advanced manufacturing, research, development and testing capabilities demonstrate that Egyptian-made sports products can meet international quality and performance standards.
Idris added that the Egyptian Olympic Committee will coordinate with the Ministry of Youth and Sports and national sports federations to assess athletes’ needs and explore the development of specialised locally manufactured sports products.
