Egypt has completed the final version of its Fourth National Communication on climate change and its first Biennial Transparency Report, marking a significant step in fulfilling its international climate commitments and strengthening its climate governance framework.

Minister of Local Development and Environment Manal Awad said Egypt is also nearing completion of its third Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), which will set out updated national targets and policies for emissions reduction, climate adaptation, and sustainable development.

In a statement, Awad described the Fourth National Communication as a strategic document that outlines Egypt’s climate actions, achievements, and future plans to address climate change. She noted that the report reflects extensive cooperation among government ministries, research institutions, and technical experts.

The project was financed by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and implemented in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

According to the ministry, the report includes a comprehensive inventory of greenhouse gas emissions for 2016 and 2017, alongside detailed assessments of mitigation opportunities, adaptation measures, technology transfer initiatives, and capacity-building efforts across various sectors.

Awad said the reports represent more than a fulfilment of Egypt’s obligations under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), serving instead as an important foundation for sustainable development planning, attracting green investment, and enhancing climate resilience.

She added that the reports provide valuable data and policy guidance to support evidence-based decision-making and strengthen the integration of climate considerations into national development strategies.

The minister also revealed that work is already underway on Egypt’s second Biennial Transparency Report, its Fifth National Communication, and the submission of its third NDCs.

Together, these documents will present Egypt’s updated vision for climate adaptation, emissions reduction, and sustainable development, while aligning national climate action with the objectives of Egypt Vision 2030 and the country’s broader environmental and economic priorities.

The latest developments underscore Egypt’s continued efforts to enhance transparency, strengthen climate reporting mechanisms, and position itself as an active participant in global efforts to address climate change and promote sustainable growth.
