As urbanization accelerates globally, with 70% of the world’s population projected to live in cities by 2050, the demand for smarter, safer, and more efficient infrastructure is intensifying. In Egypt, where urban expansion is advancing rapidly through new cities, residential communities, and infrastructure megaprojects, Otis Egypt is positioning itself as a key enabler of sustainable urban development.

Gabriele Agostini, General Manager of Otis Egypt, emphasized that the company is focused on strengthening safety standards, modernizing outdated systems, and developing local expertise to support Egypt’s evolving urban needs.

“Egypt’s urban transformation requires dependable mobility solutions that match the scale and complexity of modern developments,” Agostini told Daily News Egypt. “Whether it’s a residential tower, a commercial hub, or a public facility, our role is to ensure safe, high-performing elevator and escalator systems that align with international standards. We see ourselves as partners in Egypt’s modernization journey.”

Agostini noted that the growing number of high-rise and mixed-use developments has significantly increased the demand for vertical transportation. He underscored the importance of modernizing legacy elevator systems across the country — many of which no longer meet current safety or energy efficiency requirements.

“Upgrading these systems not only improves safety but also boosts operational performance and extends the lifespan of the equipment,” he said. “It also contributes to lower energy consumption and reduced downtime, benefiting both building owners and users.”

Urbanization, he added, is a defining trend of the 21st century. With cities becoming denser and taller, vertical mobility must evolve accordingly. Otis is investing in energy-efficient technologies, such as regenerative drive systems that return energy to the building grid, and is integrating digital tools like remote monitoring and predictive maintenance to enhance reliability.

Looking ahead, Agostini said Otis Egypt is committed to aligning its operations with Egypt’s Vision 2030, particularly in the areas of smart city development and infrastructure modernization. “We aim to continue supporting Egypt’s transformation with safe, efficient, and sustainable mobility solutions,” he said.

By the end of this year, Otis Egypt will celebrate 70 years of operations in the country, marking a significant milestone in its long-standing contribution to Egypt’s urban and infrastructure development.

Globally, Otis is a leader in elevator and escalator manufacturing, installation, and servicing. The company moves 2.4 billion people each day and maintains approximately 2.4 million units worldwide, making it the largest service portfolio in the industry.
