The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) project won the award for Best Project in the Field of Green Building during the Environment and Development Forum: The Road to the COP27 organised by the Arab Water Council in Cairo from 11 to 13 September with the participation of twelve Arab and foreign countries.

During the conference — which aims to select the best practices in the field of environment, development, and adaptation to climate change — the Council announced that the GEM project won the Green Building Award, which was received by Atef Moftah — General Supervisor of the GEM project and the surrounding area.

During his speech at the forum, Moftah reviewed the museum’s strategies to achieve sustainability goals and its environmental, economic, and social dimensions, as the museum sought to be an accredited green building and acquire the relevant certification in cooperation with the National Centre for Housing and Building Research, which will be announced soon, as well as the use of solar cell systems in cooperation with the small solar cell systems project implemented by the Industrial Modernisation Centre with the United Nations Development Programme and the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy.

Moftah also referred to the renewal of the ISO certificates obtained by the museum in September 2020 that are valid until the end of 2022, which are the international certificate in the field of occupational safety and health, the international certificate in the field of environmental management, and the international certificate for quality systems, pointing out that the museum has obtained the ISO/PAS 45005:2020 certificate, which is concerned with managing risks arising from the coronavirus to protect health, safety and welfare related to work.

Additionally, Moftah explained the genius of the museum’s site and the philosophy of its design and development of the surrounding area.

He also reviewed the services provided to visitors in terms of providing waiting areas, achieving full access for people with special needs, the innovation and distinction contained in the museum, and keenness to use natural ventilation and natural lighting, which is available in the museum’s lobby where king Ramses receives his visitors.
