Egypt’s Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad and Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Tarek El-Molla met on Tuesday to discuss preparations for Egypt’s hosting of COP27 in Sharm El Sheikh in November.

The meeting witnessed a review for the efforts of the joint working team in completing the necessary arrangements to organize a number of activities related to environmental sustainability and carbon reduction in the energy, oil and gas sectors within the conference activities.

During the meeting, Fouad and El Molla stressed that COP27 is a comprehensive conference that includes all spectra, and affirmed the need to start a dialogue with the petroleum sector to discuss ways to use the best technologies to reduce emissions.

The Minister of Environment suggested organizing a roundtable early in September to launch a dialogue on the three most important axes that will be discussed during the day on carbon reduction at the climate summit, in order to prepare well for this day.

A number of environment and climate ministers, petroleum ministers in countries around the world, development partners, international financial institutions and manufacturers of modern technologies will participate in the roundtable.

El-Molla explained that the Ministry of Petroleum, in coordination with the Ministry of Environment, will organize the Decarbonisation Day during COO27 to shed light on the policies and initiatives that companies operating in the oil and gas industry in Egypt adopt to implement in order to reduce emissions.

He stressed that Egypt’s partners in the oil and gas industry are enthusiastic to participate in this event during the conference to present their efforts and plans in this regard and to review the latest applicable technologies in the presence of a sincere desire to play their role in reducing emissions and preserving the environment.

During the meeting, the two ministers reviewed the proposal for the final agenda of the activities and discussions to be included in the Reducing CO2 Emissions Day, to be marked during the conference.

It was agreed during the meeting to hold another meeting during the coming period to follow up on the results of the implemented efforts and to adopt the final agenda for the activities concerned with energy and petroleum during the conference, in line with Egypt’s position and the global importance of the conference.
