Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi and his Algerian counterpart Abdelmadjid Tebboune asserted the importance of reaching a fair, balanced, and binding agreement on filling and operating the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) in order to preserve regional stability.

Tebboune arrived in Cairo on Monday for the first time. The visit aims to foster bilateral ties.

During their meeting, Al-Sisi stressed the importance of continuing the pace of periodic and intensive consultation and coordination between Egypt and Algeria on regional issues of common interest in order to combat the various challenges facing the Arab region, according to Presidential Spokesperson Bassam Rady.

Furthermore, Tebboune stressed that his current visit to Egypt is a continuation of the distinguished relations between the two countries and expressed his hope that this visit will add momentum to the solid and extended ties that bind the two countries.

The meeting also tackled ways to enhance bilateral relations between the two countries, with both presidents stressing the importance of enhancing integration between both countries.

The talks also witnessed the exchange of visions on a number of regional and international issues of common interest. The strategic partnership between Egypt and Algeria was also emphasised in the framework of efforts to combat terrorism and all forms of organised crime at the regional level, especially through military and informational cooperation.

Additionally, the two leaders also reviewed the latest developments in the Libyan issue and agreed to intensify coordination to reach mechanisms for resolving the Libyan crisis, bearing in mind the importance of continuing to support all efforts aiming to consolidate Libya’s stability, unity, and territorial integrity, as well preserving its institutions.

Both officials also emphasised in this context the need to work to maintain the ceasefire and to remove all foreign forces, mercenaries, and foreign fighters from Libyan territories, especially with the direct impact that this has on Egyptian and Algerian national security.

Furthermore, both Egyptian and Algerian presidents discussed the developments of the Palestinian issue, where Tebboune especially hailed the Egyptian efforts to consolidate the ceasefire between the Palestinian and Israeli sides in May 2021.

The two presidents stressed the importance for both sides to engage in the path of a political settlement to reach a just, comprehensive, and lasting solution to the Palestinian issue.
