Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the Arab League , has said that the Middle East peace process must be corrected, with a real peace process to be launched to solve the issue.

He confirmed that the Palestinians have suffered from unprecedented pressures, during the past four years, exerted on them by the outgoing US administration under former President Donald Trump.

Aboul Gheit, whose remarks came during a speech at the UN Security Council on Wednesday, added that the Palestinian issue has been subjected to a kind of deliberate neglect.

The virtually held Security Council meeting took place to discuss the situation in the Middle East, including in the occupied Palestinian territories. It was chaired by Tunisia, and with the participation of high-level Ministers of Foreign Affairs from Palestine, Russia, Ireland, and Norway.

In his speech, Aboul Gheit said that the international community, represented by the UN Security Council, remains unanimous that the two-state solution is the only acceptable formula to end the conflict between the Palestinians and the Israelis.

He also said that the coming period requires a joint effort, on the part of all parties concerned with peace in the Middle East. This will reaffirm the two-state solution with its known and agreed upon international references.

“We are looking forward to the new US administration correcting unfavourable measures and policies, and working to restore the political process to a fruitful path,” Aboul Gheit said.

He noted that this gives hope once again to the Palestinian people that the international community will do justice to its noble endeavour, and its long struggle for freedom and independence.
