Twenty-two people were killed and 28 injured on Wednesday morning when a passenger bus overturned on the Dahab-Nuweiba road in Egypt’s South Sinai, the health ministry announced.
The bus, carrying Egyptian and Jordanian passengers, was travelling from Cairo to the port of Nuweiba on the Gulf of Aqaba, in preparation for a sea transit to Jordan. The vehicle overturned in the Al-Saada area between the cities of Dahab and Nuweiba, according to a statement from the South Sinai governorate.
Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly instructed the formation of a technical committee comprising the transport and interior ministries, the South Sinai governorate, and the Administrative Control Authority to determine the cause of the incident. The committee will assess the safety and security of the vehicle, the condition of the driver, and the safety of the road.
Following the crash, Health and Population Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar activated a central operations room and dispatched 20 ambulances to the site for evacuation and first aid. He directed that maximum medical care, supplies, and medicines be provided, noting that medical teams are operating at full capacity to manage the response.
South Sinai Governor Ismail Mohamed Kamal raised the level of readiness at the governorate’s hospitals to expedite the transfer of cases and provide immediate medical care.
Minister of Social Solidarity Maya Morsy stated that coordination is underway between the Central Administration for Social Protection, the South Sinai Social Solidarity Directorate, and the Egyptian Red Crescent relief team to provide urgent interventions and assistance.
Madbouly directed the governor to conclude all legal procedures accurately, clear the traces of the crash, and provide necessary support to the victims’ families. The prime minister also expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
