Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad and Minister of Social Solidarity Nevine El-Kabbaj inaugurated, on Tuesday, 60 biogas units in Bani Hassan village, Minya governorate.

Osama Al-Qadi, the Governor of Minya; Eric Ochelan, Director of the International Labor Organization (ILO) office in Cairo; the Canadian Ambassador in Cairo; the Managing Director For the National Bank of Kuwait; the President of Minya University; among civil society representatives have witnessed the opening ceremony.

The project came within the framework of the presidential initiative for providing a decent life for the neediest villages, and the memorandum of understanding signed between the Ministry’s Bioenergy Corporation, the National Bank of Kuwait, and the ILO to implement the biogas project which costs about EGP 1.2m.

The Environment Minister emphasised that the project contributes to achieving sustainable development by linking the economic, environmental, and social dimensions, and it achieves the national and international dimension of development.

She explained that biogas units provide a source of renewable energy that is safe for household consumption, and provides green job opportunities through training engineers and technicians on bio-energy technology and the establishment of companies of entrepreneurs to work on implementing and establishing biogas units.

Biogas units also contribute to improving the health and environmental conditions of poor villages through safe disposal of animal manure and agricultural waste, and working on developing treatment systems, disposal of animal waste and production of clean fuel.

Each biogas unit produces the equivalent of two household LPG cylinders per month and saves the cost of disposal of waste. It also produces 100 litres of organic fertiliser per day sufficient to fertilise two feddan, which increases the export opportunities of agricultural products due to their dependence on organic agriculture. Six companies specialised in the field of bio-energy have been established as well.
