Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry said, on Monday, that whilst the world has been overwhelmed by the effects of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, terrorist organisations have wasted no time taking advantage.

Shoukry’s remarks came during the second ministerial meeting for the Group of Friends of Victims of Terrorism at the United Nations (UN) 75th General Assembly session.

The minister said that Egypt fully understands the suffering of victims of terrorism, and that they are not forgotten. He also said that Egypt continues to provide support to victims and their families during these hard times.

“Egypt has been a great supporter of all efforts to promote and protect victims’ rights as the counter-terrorism agenda is a top priority for Egypt,” Shoukry said.

He also expressed Egypt’s appreciation for Afghanistan and Spain, particularly relating to their joint leadership of the Group of Friends of Victims of Terrorism.

Shoukry reviewed his country’s efforts to enhance the rights of victims of terrorism through providing them with the necessary protection, as well as psychological and social care.

He added that Egypt is determined to continue its support for the UN group, and participate actively in its future activities, including rehabilitation efforts.

Shoukry participated in the UN meeting as part of the countr’s continued efforts to support the rights of terrorism victims at the international level, according to Mohamed Idris, Egypt’s Permanent Representative to the UN.

Idris also indicted that Egypt is a leading figure among those countries sponsoring General Assembly Resolution No 305/73 issued in 2019, on strengthening international cooperation to assist victims of terrorism.
