The Egyptian National Blood Transfusion Services is cooperating with Facebook to launch an online campaign to encourage people to donate blood, and motivates those who have recovered from coronavirus to donate blood plasma that can help patients in critical condition get better, Egypt’s Ministry of Health announced on Thursday.

The ministry is conducting clinical trials which involve taking plasma from the blood of someone who had contracted coronavirus and fully recovered, and injecting the active COVID-19 cases with the plasma to see if a transfusion can help in boosting the latter’s immune response.

Dr. Khaled Mogahed, spokesperson to the ministry, said that Facebook users aged between 18 and 65, can register as a blood donor on the social media platform, and they will be notified by blood donation centres in their vicinity when there is a need for blood. Registered users can also invite their Facebook friends to join the campaign.
