About EGP 1.01bn electricity bills were collected through electronic payment services in December 2019, while electricity distribution companies collected EGP 860m bills in November, Ayman Hamza, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy said.

About 8.725 million subscribers were able to pay their electricity bills electronically in December, and the ministry seeks to expand in electronic payment services in the coming period.

Hamza said that the standardised reading programme for all nine electricity distribution companies will be completed at the national level in March to ensure its accuracy and address any errors in the programme.

He explained that the Electricity Ministry contracted with a private sector company to read energy meters to ensure accurate billing.

“It cannot be said that the system is going 100% correctly. Of course there are mistakes that we recognise and work to avoid,” Hamza said, adding that meter readings would be more accurate after automating the process and switching to prepaid meters which allow subscribers to monitor their consumption.

He pointed out that the government launched an application to charge electric meters through mobile phones. The app will soon be available all over the country.
