Egypt’s Prosecutor General Hamada El-Saway has ordered an autopsy and investigation of the death of an Egyptian-American citizen who died in a prison hospital on Monday.

The prosecution will question doctors of both Cairo University Hospital and Tora Prison Hospital, who treated Mustafa Kassem before he passed away. The statement indicates that he was receiving necessary treatment in the prison hospital, and transferred to Al-Qasr Al-Aini Hospital when the condition worsened.

Kassem, 54, went on hunger strike last year to protest his conviction and his allegedwrongful imprisoned.

. In 2013, he was arrested and tried in Egypt.

In September 2018, Kassem was sentenced to 15 years in prison in a case known as “Rabaa Muslim Brotherhood sit-in dispersal” over accusations of “murder and inciting violence.”

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo previously raised concerns about Americans allegedly detained in Egypt, including Kassem during a meeting with his Egyptian counterpart Sameh Shoukry.
