Average weekly wage in Egypt amounts to EGP 1,104 in 2018: CAPMAS

The average weekly wage in Egypt amounted to EGP 1,104 for employees in both public and private sectors (10+ employees), up from EGP 1,050 in 2017, according to the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS).

In its annual bulletin of employment, wages, and working hours statistics, the CAPMAS explained that the average weekly wage for an employee in the public sector increased to EGP 1,278 in 2018, compared to EGP 1,247 in 2017.

In the private sector, the average weekly wage amounted to EGP 877 in 2018, compared to EGP 779 in 2017.

The average weekly wage for male employees in both public and private sectors amounted to EGP 1,120, compared to EGP 1,063 in 2017, the CAPMAS added. While the average weekly wage for female employees in both public and private sectors amounted to 1,022 EGP last year, compared to 985 EGP in 2017.

Furthermore, the agency revealed that the financial intermediation and insurance activities scored the highest average of the weekly wage by EGP 3,289, up from EGP 3,106 in 2017.

Meanwhile, education activity scored the least average of weekly wages by EGP 521 in 2018, compared to EGP 490 in 2017.

All the wages and salaries are expected to increase in 2019 after President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi had decide at the end of March to raise the country’s minimum wage to EGP 2,000 starting from July.

In addition, the government announced a EGP 150 exceptional bonuse to all public employees to absorb the high inflation.

This move will increase the salaries and wages item in the state budget by EGP 30.5bn to EGP 300bn.

Talking about the average weekly working hours for employees, the CAPMAS stated that the average weekly working hours for employees in both public and private sectors (10+ workers) recorded 52 hours in 2018.

It explained that the average working hours for employees in the private sector is more than that of employees in the public sector, as it amounted to 55 hours in the private sector.
