The EU leaders endorsed an agreement on the UK’s withdrawal from the union after about four hours of discussion at the EU headquarters in Brussels, Belgium on Sunday, according to the President of the European Council Donald Tusk.

He announced via his Twitter account that all the EU leaders have agreed on the agreement, including Spain which had fears over the future of Gibraltar region –a British overseas territory in southern Spain.

“EU27 has endorsed the Withdrawal Agreement and Political Declaration on the future EU-UK relations,” Tusk wrote. He added that regardless of how the Brexit process will end, “one thing is certain: we [EU and UK] will remain friends until the end of days, and one day longer.”

Negotiations between UK and EU over the Brexit agreement lasted for about 20 months after the 2016 referendum when the majority of British people voted for UK’s withdrawal from EU.

The agreement still needs to be approved by the UK parliament where several members have expressed their rejection of the deal. However, the UK Prime Minister Theresa May called for the British people to support the deal.
