Al-Sisi, Kushner discuss Israeli-Palestinian peace process

Kushner, his Middle East peace team also met King Abdullah of Jordan, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu

Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi met on Thursday with Jared Kushner, US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser, as part of his Middle East tour that aims to discuss the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.

Thursday’s meeting was attended by Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and Abbas Kamel, the interim chief of Egypt’s General Intelligence Service. According to the Egyptian presidency, Al-Sisi explained to the American delegation Egypt’s latest efforts to counter militancy and terrorism.

He also expressed the keenness of the Egyptian state on enhancing its relations with the American administration.

Last August, the US withheld part of its military and financial aid to Egypt, denying the state $95.7m in aid and delaying a further $195m because of “its failure to make progress on respecting human rights and democratic norms.”

Kushner was accompanied by special representative for international negotiations Jason Greenblatt. According to the US State Department, they discussed increasing cooperation between the United States and Egypt, the need to facilitate humanitarian relief to Gaza, and the Trump administration’s efforts to facilitate peace between the Israelis and Palestinians.

Kushner and his Middle East peace team followed their meeting with Al-Sisi with other meetings with King Abdullah II of Jordan and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
