The Organising Committee of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia has announced, in cooperation with the Russian government, the development of a new radar and air surveillance system of planes during the tournament to be held this summer.

The new system aims to improve air surveillance due to the expected pressure on air travel during the summer, which may witness about 1 million tourists visiting Russia as the country hosts the most important sports event of 2018.

The committee added that the completion of the new air surveillance system will take place before the end of the first quarter of this year, which is the end of March at the latest, in order to prepare it for practical testing before putting it to official use.

“The first flight took off under difficult weather conditions, which indicates the high quality of technical and training preparations,” said the chairperson of the company that will be announcing the new surveillance system.

In a related context, the committee has announced the date for opening the Kaliningrad Stadium which will be hosting matches of the 2018 World Cup.

According to the Russian news agency TASS, the stadium will open on 22 March. The field will host a friendly match between local club FC Baltika Kaliningrad and the German FC Schalke 04.

Kaliningrad Stadium will witness a match between Morocco and Spain. It can accommodate over 35,000 spectators.

All the fields that will witness World Cup matches will be opened in April and May, as some experimental matches will take place in order to test their readiness for the official games.

Russia is hosting the world football competition from 14 June to 15 July.
