In a Monday press conference, prominent lawyer and politician Khaled Ali became the first to announce a presidential bid for 2018 elections. Ali is a former candidate in 2012 elections.
Before the conference, Ali reported that security forces stormed a printing house and seized material intended for distribution during the event, saying the act reflected “the security’s state’s oppression of any attempt to open the public sphere.”
Ali focused his speech in the conference held at the headquarters of Al-Dostour Party on what he considered failures to deliver promises by the current regime to the people, going through price hikes, the Red Sea islands case in which he was the state’s opponent, foreign debt, security challenges, among others.
He said he would uphold constitutional guarantees of citizens rights and freedoms, implement measures to monitor the performance of state institutions with transparency, achieve transitional justice and face terrorism on a security and intellectual level without compromising human rights.
