CPA agrees with Samsung to compensate customers over Galaxy Note 7 battery flaw

Atef Yacoub, head of the Consumer Protection Agency (CPA), recently met with Sherif Barakat, vice president of Samsung Electronics Egypt, and Tamer El-Gamal, head of household products sector at Samsung, to discuss the compensation of local customers who bought faulty Galaxy Note 7 devices, according to an official at the CPA.

The official stated that the two sides agreed to recall and replace those phones under the governmental supervision of the CPA.

Samsung Egypt has asked its agents to recall the Galaxy Note 7 from the market on Saturday because of a problem with the phone battery. A local trader said that he has received notification from one of Samsung’s agents asking him to halt sales of the new device on Saturday. The South Korean electronics giant on Friday said that it would halt sales of Galaxy Note 7 around the world.

A number of officials in Samsung met with several major mobile phone agents to inform them of the mechanism of replacing the defective phones.

Samsung has announced that in response to cases that have recently been circulating over the Galaxy Note 7, it has conducted full investigation and found a “battery cell issue”. Samsung has received 35 separate reports worldwide since 1 September, out of 2.5 million sold devices to date. The company is now working with suppliers to root out other “affected batteries” in the market.

Samsung said that it halted the new device sales to ensure customer safety. According to a source in Samsung Egypt, the parent company is considering the compensation of its customers.
