A police officer was killed on Sunday morning by an improvised explosive device (IED) in an attack near Al-Hasna in central Sinai.

The explosion also injured a police corporal.

The two were driving a police car on a highway near Al-Hasna when the explosion occurred. The officer and the corporal were transferred to Al-Arish Military Hospital.

After the explosion, police forces launched an operation to search the explosion area and other nearby areas to detonate other potential IEDs and to collect information on the perpetrators of the attack.

The attack is believed to have been executed by the Islamic State-affiliated militant group ”Sinai Province”, who are centralised mainly in North Sinai and other nearby regions.

The Ministry of Interior did not publish any statement about the explosion. Daily News Egypt has made attempts to contact the ministry to verify the attack but did not receive a response.
