MP Haitham El-Hariri, charged with disturbing public order, appeared before court on Wednesday after the House of Representatives approved a decision to lift his parliamentary immunity.

Alexandria Criminal Court acquitted MP Haitham Al-Hariri on Saturday of violence-related charges dating back to 2013.

Al-Hariri was accused of “disrupting public order” during the clashes between Muslim Brotherhood members and activists from the Tamarod campaign which called for protests against former president Mohamed Morsi in 2013. He was previously sentenced to 3-year imprisonment in absentia.

The MP, who is confident of his innocence, expressed his worries about the fate of other detainees in prison, in a video on Al-Masry Al-Youm’s website.

“I was sure of my innocence and have been waiting to hear the court’s verdict. But what about the rest of the detainees? How much longer will they face this injustice?” he said, referring to the case of Mohamed Mahamoud, known as “the T-shirt detainee”, who was detained and imprisoned for 2 years before just recently being released.
