Holstentor Gate

A proud symbol of freedom, power and affluence, the Holstentor Gate is the landmark of the Hanseatic city of Lübeck. It looks back on history stretching back over 500 years.
Along with 1,000 listed buildings and historic alleyways, the Holstentor Gate in Lübeck is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Brick Gothic construction is a relic of Lübeck’s medieval city fortifications. Behind its up to 3.50-meter (11.4 ft) thick walls, there is a museum on trade, which focuses on how the Hanseatic League made the city important and wealthy. As the city grew richer, so did the demand for protection, which is why the gate was built in the years 1464 until 1478. It was also intended as a demonstration of power.
