Officer shot, critically injured in Fayoum

More alleged Muslim Brotherhood members arrested on terrorism charges

Unknown assailants in Beni Suef shot at a police officer, who works as a lower-ranked officer in the Fayoum Security Directorate, while he was on his way to work.

The officer, whom state media reported was wounded by six bullets, was transported to hospital for medical treatment, where he is currently in intensive care.

Shootings have become common in Egypt since the ouster of former president Mohamed Morsi in July 2013, with police and army officers, as well as state officials, the main targets.

The Egyptian state and Ministry of Interior have frequently accused the Muslim Brotherhood and affiliated groups of engineering the attacks on the officials.

Almost daily arrests currently take place, where individuals are detained and charged with belonging to the now outlawed group.

In Menufiya, two alleged Muslim Brotherhood members were arrested, on charges of setting fire to ATM machines in the governorate and manufacturing bombs. The Ministry of Interior said the defendants were arrested in possession of explosives and automatic weapons.

Last week, ATM machines in Menufiya were torched by unknown assailants in two separate incidents. Similarly in the Gharbeya governorate, two suspected Muslim Brotherhood members were arrested after being accused of possessing anti-government flyers and Rabaa signs, as well as for inciting violence.
