Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry received two separate phone calls from his US and Russian counterparts, Secretary of State John Kerry and Sergei Lavrov, respectively on Monday.

During the telephone conversations, Shoukry discussed with Kerry and Lavrov the situations of regional issues and conflict zones in the Middle East.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ahmed Abou Zeid said Shoukry and Kerry discussed developments in the Yemeni crisis, and followed up on the latest points discussed in the recent strategic dialogue held in Cairo.

Kerry reiterated the US’ support for Egypt in its fight against terrorism, and welcomed its participation in the US’ global anti-IS coalition, during the strategic dialogue which occurred between Kerry and Shoukry last Sunday in Cairo.

Meanwhile, Shoukry discussed with Lavrov developments in Syria and possible ways to resolve the conflict, in addition to the outcomes of the latest tripartite meeting between Russia, the US and Saudi Arabia in the Qatari capital, Doha. Both ministers also discussed bilateral relations between Egypt and Russia.

Egyptian-Russian relations have become increasingly important since President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi took office. Joint military exercises highlight proximity between the participants.
