The militant group, Ajnad Misr, claimed responsibility for the bombing that injured eight people at the Cairo University metro station on Saturday.

The Islamist group said their operatives managed to plant an explosive device at the security force station deployed at the university, according to a statement on the Twitter account affiliated to the group.

However, they claimed the bombing killed several police officers while the Health Ministry announced Saturday eight injuries without deaths.

Ajnad Misr has been active since January 2014 when they announced the start of their operations against security personnel and facilities.

There has been a persistent targeting of security officers in Egypt through explosions and drive-by shootings. At least four policemen have been killed in the governorates of Matruh, Menufya, Suez and Sinai since the new Minister of Interior Magdy Abdel Ghaffar was sworn into office on 5 March.

The government had increased security measures in universities at the beginning of the academic year 2014/2015, in response to a violent student movement that had erupted the previous year. Falcon Security, a private company, had been put in charge of 12 universities, including Cairo University, Al-Azhar, Ain Shams and Alexandria universities.

While students’ demonstrations have been relatively contained for this academic year, attacks on police cars securing university campuses have increased. Perpetuators have claimed revenge for the security force’s brutality against students.
