An explosive device killed an army officer in northern Sinai’s Al-Arish early Thursday morning, the military spokesperson said.

The military gave its condolences to the officer, Hany El-Beltagy, in a media statement.

This incident marks the second time this month that a military sergeant dies while attempting to defuse a bomb.

The army has established a buffer zone in North Sinai governorate along the Gaza border, which now measures 13km in length and 500 metres in width.

The buffer zone is currently in an extension process and is to amount to a total width of 5km. According to the military, this is to ensure that no underground smuggling tunnel could bypass the area.

North Sinai has witnessed frequent clashes between security personnel and militant groups since the army ousted former president Mohamed Morsi in July 2013.
