Vice-President Mahmoud Mekky officially resigned on Saturday, stating that his political position “does not suit his judiciary profession.”

In a statement, Mekky said that he had earlier submitted his resignation on 7 November, but President Mohamed Morsy did not accept it. His first resignation was not announced publicly due to the Israeli aggression on Gaza taking place at the same time.

Mekky stated he was not aware of the 22 November declaration until he arrived in Pakistan, where he was assigned by Morsy to replace him in attending the D8 summit.

“After the 22 November constitutional declaration there have been a number of situations that urged me to help in canceling this declaration and the issuance of a new one,” said the statement.

Mekky said he has helped in engaging with political groups of diverse inclinations to achieve national dialogue and eliminate the polarisation in Egypt.

“Since I assumed this post I have tried my utmost to achieve national interest in all fields I have worked in,” Mekky said in the statement.

The new constitution does not include the position of vice-president.
