CAIRO: Egypt’s Prosecutor General on Thursday denied reports claiming toppled president Hosni Mubarak and his family were in Saudi Arabia, insisting they were still in an Egyptian Red Sea resort.
“There is no truth to what was reported [on Wednesday] that former president Hosni Mubarak and his family are currently out of the country,” said Abdel Meguid Mahmoud’s spokesman Adel Al-Said.
He said the prosecutor’s office had received some legal paperwork on Wednesday signed by the president at his residence in the resort town of Sharm El-Sheikh.
The state-owned daily Al-Akhbar on Wednesday said Mubarak was receiving medical treatment for cancer in Saudi Arabia, citing “informed sources.”
It said Mubarak, his wife and two sons were living on a military base in the north eastern Saudi city of Tabuk, not far from Sharm El-Sheikh where the 82-year-old went after his resignation on February 11.
Egyptian authorities on Monday slapped a travel ban on Mubarak and his family and also imposed a freeze on their assets.
The nationwide protests that erupted on January 25 and forced Mubarak from power left at least 384 dead, more than 6,000 injured and scores detained.
