Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty and Massad Boulos, Senior Advisor to the US President for Arab and African Affairs, discussed efforts to de-escalate ongoing crises in Sudan, Libya, and the Horn of Africa during a phone call on Sunday.
Regarding the conflict in Sudan, Abdelatty emphasised firm support for the country’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, while rejecting any attempts to establish parallel entities. He stressed the necessity of ensuring safe and sustainable access to humanitarian aid, alongside advancing a comprehensive, Sudanese-led political path that meets the citizens’ aspirations for security and stability.
The conversation also addressed the geopolitical situation in the Horn of Africa, where Abdelatty warned against any unilateral actions that could threaten regional peace and security or seek to impose maritime access by force in violation of international law. In this context, the minister highlighted the state’s participation in the second summit of troop-contributing countries to the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), held in Kampala late last July. He stressed the importance of providing the necessary funding and support to empower the mission, safeguard security gains achieved in Somalia over recent years, and prevent the resurgence of terrorist threats.
On Libya, the two officials exchanged views on current developments and efforts to advance the political process. Abdelatty reaffirmed support for Libya’s unity and national institutions, advocating for a comprehensive settlement through a Libyan-Libyan dialogue. He noted that this process should lead to holding simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections as soon as possible to end the state of division.
Boulos expressed gratitude for the constructive efforts made to reduce regional escalation and unify Libyan institutions. Both sides agreed on the importance of continuing their consultations and intensifying regional and international efforts aimed at supporting diplomatic solutions to the crises, thereby enhancing security and stability across the African continent.
