CAIRO: Zamalek claimed a 2-0 victory over Police Union in the Egyptian Premier League on Wednesday to avoid ending the season in their lowest ever position.

Two second-half penalties from Alaa Kamal and Hani Saied gave the White Knights all three points.

They finished sixth in the 16-team table on 42 points, just like they did in the 2004/2005 season.

Swiss coach Michel Decastel played a major role in Zamalek s progress, having been appointed while the team was facing the risk of relegation to the second division.

Zamalek have never finished lower than sixth place since the league s inauguration in 1948.

Earlier in the season, the Cairo giants set their worst record of defeats in one season after losing their tenth league game against Ismaili.
