CAIRO: The National Democratic Party (NDP) denied news reports claiming it planned to dissolve the People’s Assembly.

Mohamed Kamal, the official NDP spokesperson, told Daily News Egypt that the news is false and “has no basis.

In its Wednesday issue, Al-Shorouk daily newspaper reported that the NDP plans to dissolve the PA at the end of the current parliamentary session.

Mohamed Khalil Kwaitah, PA member affiliated with the NDP, also denied the news. “I attended all the NDP meetings and we never spoke about dissolving the PA, Kwaitah said.

The current parliamentary session is expected to come to a close this month.

However, two of the most controversial draft laws – one on mental health law and another that would allow women to acquire more seats in parliament – have yet to be approved.

The two laws were highlighted in President Hosni Mubarak s speech to the PA, commencing the new parliamentary session last October.

However, Kwaitah said that the law pertaining to the number of women in the PA might be discussed during the coming weeks.
