LUXOR: Police say seven workers sustained serious burns when a fire broke out among the gas canisters in a warehouse for hot air balloons in the Egyptian temple city of Luxor.

The fire erupted early Saturday when a spark ignited the gas as workers were refilling the canisters, said the police official on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the press.

Police estimated that there was nearly a million dollars in damage to the hot air ballooning equipment belonging to the Viking Travel, one of the many companies offering balloon rides over Luxor s monuments.

Police evacuated locals from the neighborhood as explosions shook the area and fireballs shot into the sky for three hours.
