CAIRO: Libya missed out on a place in next year s African Cup of Nations following a 1-1 draw with DR Congo on Saturday.

Galatasaray striker Shabani Nonda gave the hosts the lead five minutes before the break through a penalty following Mbala Mbuta’s fall inside the area.

Libya’s Khaled Hussein leveled the score seven minutes after the restart when his shot went into the back of the net following Tarek Al-Tayeb s neat pass.

Libya finished third in Group J with eight points, one behind second-placed DR Congo and two adrift of leaders Namibia, who defeated Ethiopia 3-2 to secure passage to the Nations Cup.

The North Africans took part in the 2006 competition in Egypt but failed to qualify for Africa s elite tournament for the second consecutive time.
