Exports of Egyptian cotton decreased by 54.2% in the second quarter of the agricultural season 2015/2016, according to the Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS).

Exports reached 112,700 metric kantar between December 2015 and February 2016 compared to 246,000 metric kantar during the same period of the previous season.

This decline is due to the decrease of the cotton crop, according to CAPMAS.

The amount of local consumed cotton decreased by 56.6% to reach 76,400 metric kantar between December 2015 and February 2016 compared to 175,800 metric kantar in the same period of the previous season.

The report pointed out that this decrease came following the shutdown of a number of spinning factories.

The amount of ginned cotton decreased by 29.5% to reach 900,000 metric kantar between December 2015 and February 2016 compared to 1.3m metric kantar during the same period of the previous season.

The report added that the amount of pressed cotton decreased by 46.3% to reach 540,000 metric kantar between December 2015 and February 2016 compared to 1m metric kantar during the same period of the previous season.
