President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres discussed developments in Gaza and the West Bank, efforts to ease regional tensions, and conflicts in Sudan, Libya and the Horn of Africa during Guterres’ visit to Cairo, while also calling for reform of the United Nations and Security Council.
Egypt’s presidency said on Monday that Al-Sisi reaffirmed Cairo’s support for the central role of the United Nations and the multilateral system, stressing the need to resolve conflicts peacefully and uphold the UN Charter and international law.
Al-Sisi called for comprehensive reform of the Security Council to better reflect global balances and strengthen African representation.
He also highlighted Egypt’s contribution to UN peacekeeping missions and its hosting of numerous UN offices and agencies, saying international confidence in the multilateral system depended on strengthening the organisation’s ability to respond effectively to conflicts and global crises.
Guterres, according to the presidency, praised Egypt’s role in efforts to resolve Middle East conflicts, particularly the Palestinian issue, and welcomed Cairo’s efforts to consolidate the Gaza ceasefire and facilitate humanitarian aid into the enclave.
The UN chief said there could be no lasting peace in the region without a just settlement of the Palestinian issue and expressed deep concern over developments in the West Bank.
He urged the international community to act to halt violations against Palestinians in both Gaza and the West Bank, the presidency said.
The meeting also covered tensions in the Gulf, with Guterres praising Egyptian efforts to prevent further escalation.
He said there was an opportunity to reach understandings that could help ensure freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and address Iran’s nuclear programme through peaceful means.
Guterres also expressed readiness to support efforts aimed at preventing renewed escalation or a return to wider conflict.
Al-Sisi and Guterres discussed developments in Sudan, Libya and the Horn of Africa, stressing the need for peaceful settlements and respect for international law.
Al-Sisi praised Guterres’ efforts since taking office in 2017 to defend multilateralism and strengthen the UN’s role in peace, security, sustainable development and humanitarian response. The secretary-general, in turn, expressed appreciation for Egypt’s support for the organisation and its peacekeeping and humanitarian work.
