Egypt’s Minister of Youth and Sports, Ashraf Sobhy, has participated in the International University Sports Federation (FISU) Executive Committee and Board of Directors meetings in China to discuss the strategic expansion of global university sports.

Sobhy, who also serves as the President of the African University Sports Federation and a member of the FISU Executive Committee, joined international university sports leaders to address the development of the sporting system and the broadening of the international participation base, the Ministry of Youth and Sports said in a statement.

The meetings focused on enhancing cooperation between continental and international federations and reviewing preparations for upcoming university sports championships and events, according to the ministry.

Sobhy said Egypt’s active participation in the FISU meetings reflects the “advanced position” the country holds on the international sporting stage. He noted that university sports represent a fundamental pillar for building Egyptian citizens, discovering talent, and supporting pathways to professional sports.

The Egyptian government prioritises cooperation with international sports institutions and the exchange of expertise to implement global best practices in managing university sports, the minister added. He said this aligns with the “New Republic” vision and the state strategy to build a generation capable of leadership and competition.

As President of the African University Sports Federation, Sobhy presented a vision for the continent’s sporting development. He emphasised the importance of supporting national federations and enabling university students to practice sports professionally to create champions capable of regional and international competition.

The FISU meetings are part of an effort to strengthen international partnerships and develop policies for sustainable sporting development, highlighting the growing role of Africa and Egypt in shaping the future of university sports globally, the statement said.
