CAIRO: The international Quartet for Middle East peace is due to meet in Egypt in June with members of the Arab League, Secretary General Amr Moussa said on Tuesday.
We expect to have a meeting with the Quartet in the coming two to three weeks to discuss future plans and the future course of action, Moussa told reporters after a meeting with Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis.
The Quartet – the European Union, Russia, the United Nations and the United States – said in May that it planned to reconvene in the Middle East this month with Israeli and Palestinian representatives.
The Quartet also agreed to meet in the region with members of the Arab League to follow up on the Arab Peace Initiative and efforts to advance the regional track, it said.
The initiative, revived at this year s Arab Summit in Riyadh, offers normal relations with Israel in return for full withdrawal from Arab lands seized in 1967, the creation of a Palestinian state, and the return of Palestinian refugees.
Bakoyannis said the EU wanted to engage more in the region.
We need a breakthrough, we need to give some very concrete answers to public opinion in the region, she told reporters.
Moussa also said that talks Egypt is holding with rival Palestinian factions in Cairo to cement a ceasefire in Gaza were positive.
We hope [the talks] will end with a permanent and stable agreement.
